THE TRUCKS DON'T SLEEP. BUT DO THEY HAVE LOCKS ON THE DOORS?

Today, McLane Company — a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary serving nearly every ZIP code in America — launched fully autonomous, driverless commercial hauls between Dallas and Houston with Aurora Innovation.

The logistics world is celebrating. I'm watching the attack surface grow in real time.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED

After a 3-year, 280,000-mile supervised pilot with 100% on-time performance, McLane approved SAE Level 4 driverless operations on the Dallas–Houston corridor. The Aurora Driver now handles the full middle mile — highway hauls — with human drivers managing final-mile delivery.

Aurora is expanding to additional Sun Belt routes by end of 2026, with 200 fully observer-free trucks deploying this year. Partners include FedEx, Uber Freight, Schneider, Hirschbach, Werner, and Volvo.

The food supply chain just became a networked system.

THIS ISN'T JUST A TRUCKING STORY

Every freight broker, 3PL, and carrier in your network needs to understand what this moment actually represents.

McLane serves chain restaurants, convenience stores, and mass merchants — including Walmart. When the food supply chain goes autonomous, it doesn't just change operations. It creates a new class of networked, software-defined infrastructure rolling down American highways at 65 mph.

Aurora's trucks are equipped with redundant braking, steering, power, sensing, controls, computing, cooling, and communication systems.

That's not a safety checklist. That's an attack surface inventory.

📦280,000 — Autonomous miles logged in the pilot

🚛 200 — Observer-free trucks deploying in 2026

🏭 80+ — McLane distribution centers nationwide

The Attack Surface Nobody Is Talking About

01 📡 REMOTE TELEMETRY INTERCEPTION Autonomous trucks communicate constantly — with dispatch, route management, and remote assistance teams. A compromised channel doesn't just leak data. It can redirect a 40-ton asset.

02 🔗 THIRD-PARTY INTEGRATION RISK McLane's network touches freight brokers, 3PLs, restaurant brands, and distribution partners. Every API connection to an AV platform is a potential lateral movement path into the broader supply chain.

03 🎯 HIGH-VALUE CARGO TARGETING Driverless trucks carry valuable food cargo on predictable, published routes with no human defender on board. Supply chain intelligence — knowing what's on the truck and when — is now a premium criminal commodity.

04 🧠 AI MODEL MANIPULATION Aurora's "Verifiable AI" is designed to prevent adversarial exploitation. But as these systems scale, the incentive to probe and manipulate autonomous decision-making only grows. This is frontier threat territory.

05 🏗️ INFRASTRUCTURE DEPENDENCY CONCENTRATION When dozens of routes converge on a single platform, one software vulnerability becomes a supply chain event. Concentration risk in autonomous freight is now a national infrastructure concern.

06 🔐 TERMINAL & HANDOFF POINT EXPOSURE Driverless trucks transfer loads to human drivers at physical terminals in Dallas and Houston. These nodes — and the systems managing them — become high-value targets for physical-digital attacks.

WORTH NOTING

Aurora's own Driverless Safety Report states they "developed an adaptive security approach in case the self-driving system becomes a target of potential security threats."

That's the right statement. Now ask: who's auditing it?

BOTTOM LINE FOR BROKERS, 3PLs & CARRIERS

You don't need to operate autonomous trucks to be in scope. If your TMS connects to a carrier running Aurora-powered equipment, if you tender loads on autonomous lanes, if you receive EDI or API feeds from McLane or similar distributors —

👉 You are now adjacent to this attack surface.

Physical safety and cyber resilience are not the same discipline. The freight industry has answered the first question well. The second question is wide open.

That's the conversation The Cyber Feight Room exists to start.
